The 2009/10 National County Sports Meet got to a start Sunday with several astonishing result.

In group one defending Football champions Bomi County were flog 3-0 in their own back by Margibi County in Tubmanburg  in football and also suffer a  narrow 9-10 home runs defeat to their opponents.

Lofa were edge by  2007 winners Rivercess county 1-2 in Voinjama, while they were humiliated 1-26 home runs in kick ball by the three consecutive time champions in group three.

Group two saw Nimba County playing to fascinating 1-1 draw with rival Grand Gedeh County in Saniquelle right infront president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

 According to correspondent Nimba control the proceeding in the first half but fail to capitalize on couple of goal scoring opportunities, before Grand Gedeh resurface in the second half to savage the draw.

 But it was a well deserved Victory for their kickball team as they went on to beat Grand Gedeh 22-6 home runs in a sided derby.

 Elsewhere in the South east Grand Kru County were held to disappointing goalless draw by 2008 winners Bong County in Barclayvill.

 In kickball Grand Kru edge their opponents 3-2 home runs in classic kickball encounter on Sunday.

Garzeawu was awarded at a former ceremony held Saturday December 6, 2009 evening in Monrovia at the climax of SWAL 23^rd anniversary celebration.

Presenting the award to the young sports Journalist, Press Union of Liberia president, Peter Quaqua lauded Garzeawu for the achievement and cautions him to keep up the hard work in other to earn top laurel in the future.

At last years award ceremony the lad was honor as the Most Improved Sports Reporter of years 2007/08.

‘’I am delighted and full of joy, the last time I was the most improved and tonight I am the Best but I don’t think I am actually the best’’ Garzeawu told the gathering at the ceremony.

Garzeawu who is also a hand made of the Chairman of the awards committee Zoegar Jaynes was fast to point out how aggressively he was tutor, ‘’if tension can move you fast and take you off focus than you will never work with Mr. Jaynes because of the way he handle things and situation harshly’’.  

Announcing the result the Chairman of the Awards Committee, Zoegar Jaynes disclosed that the Star Radio Reporter entry beat four other entries to achieve the honor.

Star Radio mid-week Sports Magazine program, Sports Round-up was also awarded as Sports Program of the 2008/09.

FLASHBACK:TAKING A KICK OFF ONE THE COUNTY MEET EVENT

 The 15 Counties have already being paired in four groups.

 This year’s opening ceremony will take place in the Nimbain capital Sanniqulle with the host County taking on Grand Gedeh County in a group four fixture.

Several Matches will also be played at three other venues in the counties.

 Defending football champions Bomi County will welcome last year quarter finalist Margibi in Tubmanburg in a group one meeting in a classical derby.

 Group three will see last competition semi-finalist Lofa taking on 2007 winners Rivercess County in Voinjama in what is expected to be cracker.

The final match of the weekend will be Barclayville and will see last competition Quarter finalist Grand Kru taking former Champions and Third place holder Bong County.

 The 2009/10 national county sports meet will feature five different sporting disciplines.

 They include Football, Basketball and Kickball.

 The other two are Track and Field and Volleyball.

  Already the Ministry of Youth and Sports have made available 21 thousand United States dollars to the 15 counties as an initial preparation allotment.

The Chairman of the organization committee of this year’s event Murvee Gray told Star Sports recently counties who advance to the next stage of the competition will receive additional allotment and an undisclosed amount has being place in the trophies for the winners.

LIBERIA AND HEARTLAND FC FOWARD BILL SHERIFF

The former Black Star forward opened the scoring for the CAF champions’ league runners-up in the 5^th minute against Waurri Wolves in the Owerri debut.

Bill Sheriff had his first GPL test on Sunday in his side goalless away draw with giants Eyimba FC.

The Lone Star forward in September penned a two year deal with the CAF 2008/2009 champions’ league finalist and has been ratted high at the club.

Bill was very impressive for Black Star in the 2008/09 CAF Champions League when they were eliminated by Heartland.

 His performance made the club to find favor in him and they pressed on until they landed him in Owerri.

”This site I think will now give an obligation to sports Journalist in writing quality stories and features about the local scene, so that people can know what is happening in the country as it relates to sports”.

The Star Radio Sports Commentator said the endeavor by the Current SWAL leadership clearly signal a new page in sports writing in the country and want every sports Journalist to take it as an opportunity of reaching the International scene, because this site stands as Liberia’s only all sports website at the moment and people from all across the globe will depend on it for information relating to sports in Liberia

Garzeawu has meanwhile lauded the Center for Media Studies and Peace Building, CEMESP, of Mr. Malcolm Joseph for its assistance in helping SWAL established this site on the global net.

He has called on all members of the Association to say bravo to the Numinee Williams leadership and the CEMESP family for the initiative.
 

FODEDE BOSS WALLACE WEIAH

The president of FODEDE (Football to Develop Destitute) and  newly elected Women’s Football Chairman at the Liberia Football Association (LFA), Mr. Wallace G. Weiah has released his planed programs for the development of women’s football in Liberia. According Mr. Weiah, FODEDE has begun the recruitment and training of 32 female soccer players between the ages of 12 and 30 years old under its Street Soccer Program and also four (4) other players have been selected and sponsored to undergo coaching training under the Liberia Football Association Coaches’ Association coaching program.

 These programs have been initiated ahead of the LFA and Government future programs for Liberia Female team’s participation in international football encounters.  In order to achieve this vision of our girls getting back on the international scene, Mr. Weiah has set up a sponsorship committee, headed by Mr. Jallah Corvah. This committee is clothed with the responsibility to solicit sporting equipment and logistics for the program.  Other committee members are: D. Lorenzo Zammie, Sponsor, Senior Pro. Female team, Michael Caliyeneh, President, Blanco FC and Mr. Jimmie T. Toe, FIFA Desk Officer at the Liberia Football Association. In addition, Mr. Toe has been appointed as Program Coordinator and Coach Samuel Cooper as Technical Director for FODEDE’S Street Soccer Program in Liberia. Others on the technical team are: Dehkontee Sayon Administrative Manager, Lawrence Hne, Coach; Roberson Warnner, Assistant Coach, Emmanuel Bearkie Assistant Coach and Anthony Roberts, Medics.

 Meanwhile, FODEDE through its United States based partners; The Discoveries Soccer Club of the United States of America, has donated assorted sporting materials which include 20 footballs, 27 pieces of cones, video camera, boots, T-shirts, etc.  Also, a major consignment of sporting equipment is expected in few weeks in the country from the Homeless World Cup Foundation for use by the FODEDE Street Soccer Program.

 Players recruited also benefit from life skills training program being run by GOWGIS (Giving Opportunity to Women and Girls in Sports) this organization will engage these players in various skills training programs such as Hair platting/braiding, Tailoring, Tide dying, Pastry and Coaching; under the theme: One Step Beyond Football for women in sports empowerment enhancement.

In order to be a part of FODEDE street soccer program, it is mandatory that you participate in one or two of these life skills training programs. Participants will also have the opportunity to be recruited to represent Liberia at the Homeless World Cup International Annual Street Soccer Tournament and Liberia National Female U-17, U-20 and senior teams. Deserving players will also benefit from the International Athlete College Scholarship like Cherie Sayon and Famatta Boimah, who are currently studying in the US.,.

 However, FODEDE is calling on all humanitarian individuals, private & international organizations, including UN Agencies to donate materials and financial support to the program. These humanitarian gestures will help give these young women a better future.
